I trained in the UK and have worked in the northeast and southwest. I now live in Devon, with my family. I loved science at school, and wanted to have a career that would mean I would always be learning. I did a medical degree, because it meant I could combine science with real-life practical application and lots of people contact.

I am a NHS doctor who helps other healthcare workers treat people with infections. I give advice on which antibiotics to use and how to investigate the patient so we can diagnose the cause of their infection. Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest public health threats we face and we all have a part to play in trying to prevent it. This means I need to treat my patients with the right antibiotics at the right time, and do everything I can to stop people getting infections in the first place. My work involves infection prevention and control and investigating outbreaks. If an outbreak affects a large population, it is called an epidemic (and a pandemic if it is on a global scale).

My Typical Day:
My days at work are always busy, and always interesting.
-
What I'd do with the prize money:
I’d like to make some leaflets for our patients and their relatives to tell them about antibiotic resistance and why it is so important.
