I personally think the identification of the HPV that could cause cervical cancer was key – as was developing a vaccine which could prevent most cervical cancers. This vaccine has now been rolled out across 130 countries and will save the lives of many women, where screening programmes may not be as good as the ones in the UK. I also think the development of anti-HIV drugs has been a revelation as it allowed people to live longer lives while being infected with HIV – the number of people dying from AIDS has really decreased although resistance may be an issue in the future.
