I work on human papillomavirus (HPV)-driven cancers. The HPV is able to infect skin cells of the genital tract (usually upon their sexual debut) and most people get rid of the virus with no issues. However, a small number can’t get rid of the virus and over time, it can change the nucleus of the person that it infects. This can result in cancers of the cervix, head and neck. HPV cancers are thought to cause approximately 5-8% of all cancers globally and are a big issue in more deprived areas in the world such as Africa, where (a) they cannot afford a vaccine and (b) they do not have a cervical screening programme, which can detect changes in cells that could lead to cancer.
