Some of the infections we deal with are really common, and lots of us will have had them. For example, chickenpox, impetigo, a cold virus. Others are less common (in the UK anyway, because we are fortunate enough to live in a rich country with good levels of sanitation and clean water, a good childhood immunisation programme and free access to healthcare).
I had a terrible case of pneumonia nearly 10 years ago. I was out of work for a month – and I gave the infection to my husband. My mother then came (from the US) to take care of us and our (uninfected) children.
But everyone has infections at some point or other. Most of them we fight off without any medicine at all. Our immune systems are amazing.
