I’ve referred someone who was feeling suicidal to get help.

I have stopped a small child about to run in front of a car.

I’ve gotten vaccinated (and vaccinated my children) so we don’t get measles and other serious diseases. This protects us and helps reduce the risks of the people near me getting infected as well. If I don’t get measles, then I won’t spread it to anyone.

Less directly, but with bigger impact, my analyses have informed the people ‘on the ground’ working to stop the spread of diseases like Ebola, SARS, MERS, and influenza. Since Ebola virus disease kills most people who get infected, preventive efforts definitely saved lives.

      Hi Emily,
Nope, I don’t think I’ve directly saved someone’s life. When I was around 20 years old, I was a lifeguard in a swimming pool, but luckily no one got into any trouble in the water when I was around!

Yes, I’ve been part of medical teams that have saved patients’ lives. It is a very rewarding part about being a doctor.
