  Getting a PhD is difficult (well one that is funded). The funding body for mine is BBSRC- so of course they want to be as rigorous as possible on the application process.
  So the interview stage was intense but I think it is the same as any competitive job. You just have to make sure that you have extra-curricular activities on your CV to make you stand out- be that writing a science blog or going on different courses.
