I work in my office on my computer and meeting with other scientists and students; I work at home on the computer and on conference calls. But I also work out and about. Right now I’m in the Glasgow airport on my way home after speaking to students (about 180 of them) as part of the Glasgow Science Festival. I can run calculations and edit documents (improving the writing and making the wording more clear) anywhere I have my laptop.

I used to work in a lab but I did not like performing experiments on animals. I also did not see a career for me as an academic scientist and wanted to work with people in protecting their health. I now work in an office environment where communication between individuals is key.

I work in a hospital. My office is in the hospital laboratory, where our team of biomedical scientists and technicians process the specimens that doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals send in on their patients. My job is to interpret the results of these tests (we grow bacteria from the body fluid/tissue samples, and test to see what antibiotics will work to treat these infections) and help the healthcare professionals decide how to treat their patients. They might need antibiotics, or they might need more tests (like an Xray) or they might even need an operation. I go and visit patients on the wards in the hospital, and also go to meetings to discuss the patients with other members of the team.

So, I work in a hospital, an office and a lab!

I almost always work in an office. It is a shared office with about 10 other people. I’ve uploaded a selfie of me at my desk to my profile for you! (Here is the link: ////epidemicj17-zone//profile/lizbuckinghamjeffery/)

You can see my computer, most of my work is done on there. I’ve also got books and notes. Under my computer is a grey soft toy that is a giant version of a norovirus virus! Norovirus is the main illness that I work on and I was given this for Christmas just after I started working on this project.

      Hello,

I am split between my office (which is shared), my lab desk and the insectary.

Most days I am going between the three.

In my office I am usually answering emails and writing/ analysing up my results. In my lab (photo on my profile), I am usually mixing small volumes of liquid from one tube to another. The results of this can be extracting the DNA to checking presence of different genes in the insects. In the insectary, I have many cages full of my insects. I help maintain these cages. I also use these insects to help answer any questions I have i.e. what plant do these insects prefer.
